'Lending a Hand' to protect historic 'Coast to Coast' route

Leeds Building Society, the UK's 5th largest, contributes a lot to the communities in which it works through charitable fundraising and many of its colleagues actively volunteer in their spare time. Last year the mutual decided to encourage and support this with a formal volunteering initiative, "Lending a Hand", which allows everyone to use a day each year to help in the community.

A recent group to volunteer was the Society's Product team, who repaired erosion and sensitive landscaping at Tongue Gill outside Grasmere in Cumbria. They were under the direction of the 'Fix the Fells' team, which is part of the National Trust. Their expedition involved an early morning hike up Tongue Gill in order to ensure a full day 'Lending a Hand.'

Ian Griffiths from The National Trust said: "The Product team joined our South Lakes Path Team from the Fix the Fells project for a day working on a section of the busy Coast to Coast path that travels from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay. This path sees thousands of people walk along the route each year, which can take its toll on the fragile landscape.

"On the day Leeds Building Society joined us we worked on a section where people were avoiding the path and walking on the vegetation to the side creating a landscape scar. By the end of the day the group had repaired the scar and ensured subsequent walkers were using the intended path again, thereby helping to protect this historic route for future users."

Jaedon Green, General Manager – Products said: "Everyone came away with a great sense of achievement and perhaps a couple of aches thrown in. The team enjoyed getting involved and walkers clearly appreciated our efforts – we definitely made a difference.

"The Society's 'Lending a Hand' initiative presents huge opportunities for personal development and team building. Our colleagues across the business are currently volunteering to take part in some very worthwhile and interesting activities over the next few months."
