Leeds Building Society celebrates 50 years in Sheffield

Leeds Building Society’s branch in Sheffield is inviting customers old and new to join it in celebrating a big birthday.

The Society has been helping the people of Sheffield buy the homes they want, and save up for the things that are important to them, since 1965.

To celebrate its 50th birthday the branch, at 14 Pinstone Street in Sheffield, is holding a party on Friday 20th November.

Leeds Building Society also will be making a birthday donation to three local good causes. Visitors can vote for their favourite charity to decide which receives the largest share.

“Our team will be decorating the branch and giving cakes and goody bags to members and any other locals who want to come by and join in our celebrations,” said Emma Cooper, Leeds Building Society’s Sheffield Branch Manager.

“We will also be running a charity vote where customers can vote for one of three local charities.

“The good causes we have chosen to support are Cancer Research UK, The Children's Hospital Charity and St Luke's Hospice.

“Voting opens on Monday, 16th November, and will continue until Friday 27th November. The charities will receive £300, £200 and £100 for first, second and third place respectively.”

When Leeds Building Society first opened a branch in Sheffield in 1965 the average UK house price was £3,660. The average price today for a semi-detached property in Sheffield is £161,695.

Other events making the news in 1965 were:

  • The computer ‘mouse’ is invented
  • Sony introduced the first home-use video recorder
  • The Sound of Music won best film at The Oscars
  • The death of Winston Churchill

"For a building society which has been in existence for 140 years, it's impressive to think the Sheffield branch has been open for over a third of that time,” added Emma.
