Leeds Building Society celebrates 40 years in Horsforth

Leeds Building Society’s branch in Horsforth is inviting customers old and new to join it in celebrating a big birthday.

The Society has been helping the people of Horsforth to save and have the home they want since 1976.

To celebrate its 40th birthday the branch, at 80 Town Street in Horsforth, is holding a party on Saturday 19th November.

Leeds Building Society also will be making a birthday donation to three local good causes. Visitors can vote for their favourite charity to decide which receives the largest share.

“Our team will be decorating the branch and giving cakes and goody bags to members and any other locals who want to come by and join in our celebrations,” said Byron Wilkinson, Leeds Building Society’s Horsforth Branch Manager.

“We will also be running a charity vote where customers can vote for one of three local charities.

“The good causes we have chosen to support are Mind, Children in Need and OPAL.

“Voting will open this weekend and continue until Saturday 3rd December. The charities will receive £300, £200 and £100 for first, second and third place respectively.”

When Leeds Building Society first opened a branch in Horsforth in 1976 the average UK house price was £12,704. The average price today for a semi-detached property in Horsforth is £253,759.

Other events making the news in 1976 were:

  • The first Concorde flight took place
  • Apple Computers was founded by Steve Jobs
  • The driest summer in the UK since 1772
  • Inflation reached 17%

"For a building society which has been in existence for 141 years, it's impressive to think the Horsforth branch has been open for over a third of that time,” added Byron.
