Society’s North East branches raise £7,000 for Daft as a Brush

Colleagues at Leeds Building Society’s branches in the North East have raised £7,000 for Daft as a Brush cancer patient care during 2016.

This local charity provides free transport to and from hospital for people with cancer.

Society colleagues in the region pledged the results of all their fundraising activity this year to help Daft as a Brush, and tackled a variety of challenges to bring in the cash.

This included 10 colleagues from across Leeds Building Society’s North East branches taking part in a cycle ride during the summer between the branches in Morpeth, Durham, Blyth, Whitley Bay, North Shields, South Shields, Wallsend and Newcastle.

Other fundraisers which took place through the year included coffee mornings, sponsored slims, raffles, cake sales and tombolas.

The Society’s fundraising efforts were co-ordinated by Diane Newall, Customer Service Adviser in South Shields, who said: “This is a fantastic achievement by all colleagues and customers at our North East branches.

“The total amount raised was £7,000 which was presented to the charity at Morpeth branch. Thank you to everyone who donated and took part in fundraising activities throughout the year.

“As a building society, we’re owned by our members and it’s important to us that we support good causes in the communities where we and our members live and work.”

Peter Stoten, Co-ordinator at Daft as a Brush, said: “We are absolutely delighted that our local Leeds Building Society branches have raised £7,000 for Daft as a Brush.

“"This year we have some 300 volunteer staff, and with 22 ambulances the charity will be involved in over 20,000 cancer patient journeys.

“It costs us almost £25,000 to offer staffed custom-made vehicles to transport hospital outpatients, free of charge, for chemotherapy and radiotherapy cancer treatment.

“The service was launched six years ago and is totally reliant on donations so without the generosity of Leeds Building Society, the local public and business community we wouldn’t be able to provide our vital service.”
