Acceptable identification for Investment customers

Below is a list of documents that we will accept as proof of your identify and proof of your residential address.

Copies of documents are only acceptable if they are certified by a solicitor, accountant, independent financial adviser, bank manager or member of Leeds Building Society staff. Certified copies must include the full name, profession, business address and telephone number for the certifying party. The words “true certified copy ” must be written or stamped on the documents, which should then be signed and dated by the certifying party. A document will not be accepted if any of this information is missing.

We recommend that you do not send original copies of passports or driving licences through the post.

Primary identification

These should show your full name and photograph (not applicable for HMRC/Benefits correspondence) and either your residential address or date of birth.

  • Current UK or EU passport with photo (certified copy)
  • Current UK or EU driving licence with photo (full or provisional) (certified copy)
  • Most Recent Notification from the Department for Work and Pensions confirming rights to benefits or state pension (or benefit book)
  • HMRC tax notification (tax assessment, statement of account or notice of coding NOT P45 or P60)
  • Shotgun licence or Firearms certificate
  • Northern Ireland Voter’s Card
  • Blue Disabled Driver’s Pass
  • UK birth certificate (only to be used for people under the age of 18) (no photograph)

Address Identification

These must show your full residential address.

  • Current UK driving licence showing current address (a licence containing a photo, whether full or provisional, can only be used if it has * not been used as your primary piece of identification)
  • Most recent notification from the Department for Work and Pensions confirming rights to benefits or state pension (or benefit book)
  • HMRC tax notification (tax assessment, statement of account or notice of coding NOT P45 or P60)
  • Local Council rent card or tenancy agreement (documentation from a private landlord is not acceptable)
  • Bank or building society statement (issued within the last 3 months) (not acceptable if printed from the Internet)
  • A grant letter or student loan agreement from a Local Education Authority
  • A utility bill or prepayment certificate issued within the last 3 months (not acceptable if printed from the Internet)
  • A mortgage statement from a recognised lender (issued within the last 12 months)
  • Council tax bill (valid for current year)
  • Solicitor’s letter confirming house move within the last 3 months

You will also need to provide your initial deposit in the form of a personal cheque (must be drawn on an account that includes your name).

Please note that the same piece of identification cannot be used for both your primary and address identification.
