Leeds Building Society celebrates 60 years in Belfast

Leeds Building Society’s branch in Belfast is inviting customers old and new to help celebrate a big birthday.

The Society has been helping the people of Belfast buy the homes they want, and save up for the things that are important to them, since 1955.

To celebrate its 60th birthday the branch, at 19-21 Cornmarket, is holding a party on Wednesday 5th August.

Leeds Building Society also will be making a birthday donation to three local good causes. Visitors can vote for their favourite charity to decide which receives the largest share.

“Our team will be decorating the branch and giving cakes and goody bags to members and any other locals who want to come by and join in our celebrations,” said Ian Devany, Leeds Building Society’s Belfast Branch Manager.

“We will also be running a charity vote where customers can vote for one of three local charities.

“The good causes we have chosen to support are Macmillan Cancer Support, Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice and Tiny Life. These charities will receive £300, £200 and £100 for first, second and third place respectively.”

Voting will be opened on Wednesday, 5th August and continues until Friday, 14th August.

When Leeds Building Society first opened a branch in Belfast in 1955 the average UK house price was £2,064. The average price today for a semi-detached property in Belfast is £172,044.

Other events making the news in 1955 were:

  • Britain’s big freeze in February
  • Death of Albert Einstein in April
  • Stirling Moss claimed first Grand Prix victory in July
  • Gaitskell elected Labour leader in December

"For a building society which has been in existence for 140 years, it's impressive to think the Belfast branch has been open for almost half of that time,” added Ian.
