Foundation boosts access to dance

More people will be able to enjoy the work of Northern Ballet after the company received a donation from Leeds Building Society Foundation.

The £1,000 donation will pay for the specialist equipment Northern Ballet needs to ensure its work is accessible to all, including wheelchair users and children with life-limiting conditions.

Northern Ballet, which is a registered charity, previously had to hire and transport the equipment needed for these classes and projects,* including a changing bed, hoist and slings.

Gary Brook, Head of Corporate Communication at Leeds Building Society and a Foundation trustee said: “We’re thrilled to be able to support this project, which makes such a difference and allows people of all ages and abilities to get involved in dance and the arts.

“As a building society, we are always keen to help good causes in the communities where we and our members live and work.”

Leeds Building Society Foundation, which is independently run by a Board of Trustees, is funded in part by an annual donation from Leeds Building Society. The balance of its financial support comes mainly from the Your Interest in Theirs** scheme.

Leanne Kirkham, Director of Learning at Northern Ballet said: "It is fantastic to receive this generous donation from Leeds Building Society Foundation, which allows us to continue our commitment to providing work that is accessible to all.

“It is wonderful to see the joy in the faces of our community as they access creative activities and performances, sometimes for the first time, and this donation will allow us to build on this inclusive and supportive environment at Northern Ballet."

*Classes and projects which will be supported by the grant include: the Let’s Dance project, which gives children with life limiting conditions (and their families) the chance to enjoy creative activities together; In Motion classes for wheelchair users; the accessible dance platform Expressions; and relaxed performances at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, which is based at Northern Ballet’s headquarters in Leeds.

**Leeds Building Society’s Your Interest in Theirs scheme allows members to donate the pence amount of interest they earn on their savings to the Foundation to help good causes. It means members in the scheme donate up to 99p.

Leeds Building Society Foundation was established by Leeds Building Society in 1999 to support UK charities committed to relieving hardship and suffering, or their direct consequences, and awards grants of up to £1,000 to good causes based or operating near Society branches and offices.

The Foundation has donated more than £1.5 million to worthy causes across the UK and has helped more than 2,000 charities since its inception.
