Leeds Building Society’s parkrun community relay passes 15,000 miles

Fifteen golden batons passed to parkrunners in Leeds as part of Leeds Building Society’s Big Community Relay have travelled more than 15,000 miles in just three weeks.

The batons have been travelling the world, having popped up in France, Germany, Sweden and Australia.

Starting at Woodhouse Moor parkrun in Leeds on 28 September, the 15 batons have covered 15,822 miles (25,463km) – or the equivalent of running 5,092 parkruns.

The scheme was launched to celebrate parkrun’s 15th anniversary and was designed to show how communities throughout the UK and the world are linked. A recent national survey commissioned by Leeds Building Society* showed that 66% of people believe it’s important to be part of a community.

Laura Hodgkins, Head of Marketing at Leeds Building Society, said: “Our business really values the communities in which our colleagues and members live and work and we know from our research how important community is to people.

“The Big Community Relay has been a huge success so far, with batons travelling around the UK, Europe and even making their way to Australia, which just shows how connected our communities are.

“Parkrunners have really got behind the sense of community we hoped the project would foster and we’re looking forward to seeing where the batons pop up next weekend.

Russ Jefferys, Head of Communications at parkrun, said: "parkrun brings people together and the parkrun community has really supported Leeds Building Society’s Big Community Relay.

“It’s been fantastic to see the stories shared as the batons travel through the parkrun community.”
