How we're playing our part
At Leeds Building Society, we’re committed to doing the right thing to reduce our carbon footprint, working towards a path that aligns to the UK government’s 2050 net-zero target. Here are just a few ways we’ve tried to play our part.
Our new head office
In May 2021 our head office staff moved into a fully refurbished, carbon neutral in operation, EPC A-rated head office. The building is entirely powered by renewable energy sources and it was refitted to modern day, greener standards. Recycled glass was used throughout and 97% of the waste from refurbishment was diverted away from landfill.
We’ve also adopted a stretch of the waterway adjacent to our new head office. We're working with the Canal & River Trust to preserve local green spaces and encourage native wildlife, flora and fauna through a colleague volunteering programme.
Making our branch network more energy efficient
We’ve used renewable energy in our branches since 2016, and we’re planning a multi-million pound investment in our network to further improve energy efficiency. None of our waste goes to landfill and 85% of our waste is recycled.
Planting trees for child savers and colleagues
Since July 2021, we’ve been planting trees to represent the children’s savings accounts opened in our branches. Working with our charity partners, the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, so far we’ve planted more than 4,500 trees, including one for each of the Society’s 1,500 colleagues. The trees, which colleagues volunteered to plant, will grow to form an important habitat for wildlife as well as helping to create resilient woodlands that can help mitigate the impacts of climate change.
